At least 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” affirmed the country's president.

The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term finished the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its duties in public projects. They were built at an accelerated pace, defying forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked persistent concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party called for an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
